Mercury retrograde and relationships: what it means and what to do

2 min read · Vaelory Insights ·

Mercury retrograde is the period when the planet Mercury appears, from Earth, to move backwards through the sky. It happens about three times a year and lasts roughly three weeks each time. In astrology, Mercury rules communication, so retrograde periods are traditionally linked with misunderstandings, delays, technology glitches — and, famously, exes getting back in touch.

Is Mercury really moving backwards?

No. It is an optical effect caused by Earth and Mercury moving at different speeds around the Sun, similar to a slower train seeming to move backwards when you pass it. Astrologers use the period symbolically, as a time to slow down and review.

What it is said to mean for relationships

Exes and Mercury retrograde

The "retrograde ex text" is almost a joke at this point. Astrologers connect it with the "re-" theme of the period: review, revisit, reconnect. If an ex reaches out, the retrograde doesn't decide what it means — it simply invites you to look at the past clearly before you respond. Ask yourself whether you are drawn back by the person or by the memory. If a breakup is still on your mind, see tarot after a breakup.

How to handle it

Should you start a relationship during Mercury retrograde?

Many astrologers advise caution with big new commitments, but life doesn't stop three times a year. Plenty of happy relationships began during a retrograde. The practical advice is simply to communicate extra clearly.

Retrograde and your sign

Astrologers look at which sign Mercury is retrograde in, and which part of your own chart it touches, to describe how strongly you might feel it. An astrologer can look at this for you in a reading. For a quick overview of your sign, see our zodiac pages.

Frequently asked questions

How often does Mercury retrograde happen?

Usually three times a year (occasionally four), for about three weeks each time.

Is Mercury retrograde bad for love?

Not inherently. It is traditionally a time for reflection and clear communication rather than a time when relationships fail.

Should I text my ex during Mercury retrograde?

Astrology can't decide that for you. Take your time, think about why you want to reach out, and do what is healthiest for you.
