The Major Arcana and the Journey of Love

6 min read · Vaelory Insights

The tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into two sections: the Minor Arcana, which deals with the everyday circumstances of life, and the Major Arcana — 22 cards numbered 0 through 21 that tell the story of what is sometimes called the Fool's Journey.

This journey is the story of a soul moving through life — encountering teachers, undergoing transformation, facing darkness, and arriving, eventually, at wholeness. When you look at it through the lens of love, it maps every experience you have ever had or will have in relationship.

The Beginning: The Fool and The Lovers

The Fool (0) begins the journey in a state of pure potential — open, unguarded, stepping off the cliff with trust. This is the energy of new love. You don't know what is coming. You are willing to be vulnerable before you have any evidence that it is safe to be.

The Lovers (VI) arrives not simply as a romantic card but as a card of choice. At this point in the journey, you are asked to choose: to commit, to align your values with your actions, to be honest about what you truly want. It is one of the most serious cards in the deck precisely because it is not about passion — it is about integrity.

Every significant love in your life corresponds to a card in the Major Arcana. Which one you are living through right now is worth knowing.

The Middle: Death, The Tower, The Star

Death (XIII) is one of the most misunderstood cards in the deck. It almost never refers to literal death. It refers to transformation — the ending of one version of something so that something new can emerge. In love, this is the card of the relationship that changes you permanently, the version of yourself you leave behind after heartbreak, the grief that becomes wisdom.

The Tower (XVI) is sudden disruption — the structure that collapses because it was built on something false. In love, this is the revelation that changes everything. The relationship where you discover something that makes it impossible to continue. The moment of truth that, however painful, also sets you free.

The Star (XVII) follows The Tower. After destruction comes hope — quiet, steady, real. This is the card of healing. Of beginning to believe again. Of allowing yourself to be nourished after depletion. In love, it is the slow rebuilding of trust — in someone else, but most importantly, in yourself.

The Completion: The World

The World (XXI) is the last numbered card of the Major Arcana. It represents completion — not an ending, but the achievement of wholeness. In love, this is not the fairy tale conclusion. It is something more real: a person who has been through enough to know themselves, who has loved and lost and chosen to love again, who brings their full self into relationship without hiding the parts that have been broken.

The Fool's Journey never ends — it simply begins again, at a higher level, with more understanding. Every relationship you enter is a new loop of the journey. The question the cards ask is always the same: where are you in the story right now?
